Did You Know?
Leduc No. 1 changed Alberta forever. Drilled by Imperial Oil near Leduc, Alberta, the well struck a major oil reservoir on February 13, 1947, after years of unsuccessful exploration. The discovery, made near the former Devonian-era reef, triggered an extraordinary oil boom across the province. New workers, businesses and communities followed, while pipelines, refineries and roads expanded rapidly to support the growing industry. Leduc No. 1 helped transform Alberta from an agricultural economy into Canada’s leading petroleum-producing region. Today, the historic discovery is remembered as the beginning of Alberta’s modern oil industry and one of the most important events in the province’s history.
